  • In the early 1940s Mr & Mrs Gornall (nee Molloy) opened a village store in Elswick, Lancashire.
  • Mrs Gornall saw the need for a tea shop in the village and having obtained a cabin next to the village store in 1944 began to sell drinks and homemade cakes.
  • Following customer demand she introduced hot meals and extended the cabin to accommodate the growing trade.
  • During this period Mr Tom Lucas was the licensee of the local pub ‘The Boot & Shoe’, he made ice cream on premises and sold it through a small kiosk.
  • In 1946 Mr Lucas decided to leave the pub and the new licensee did not want to continue with the ice cream making.
  • Mrs Gornall saw an opportunity and proceeded to purchase the recipe and ice cream making equipment and start making ice cream on Bond Lane.
  • The ice cream was named after the location where it was made and it has been made there ever since with people coming from far and wide to buy it to this day.
  • Retailers across the North caught on to the popularity of the ice cream and began to buy from Bonds to sell the iconic ice cream at their own stores from local shops to the high end supermarket chain of Booths.
  • Following on from the untimely death of Mrs Gornall, a new restaurant was built on-site and replaced the previous village store.
  • Business continued to grow across the kiosk, café and restaurant under Mr Gornall, through to 1993 when at the age of 84 he passed the mantle was passed on to Martin Molly.
  • Martin Molloy, nephew of Mrs Gornall, had worked at Bonds for over 30 years – since the age of 14! Was proud to be able to continue the Bonds name.
  • Martin continued to successfully run the business up to 2017, an ambassador for the local community, known as ‘nice Mr Molloy’; He worked in every part of the business from making ice cream by hand to sourcing the best produce and serving his iconic ice cream at the House of Lords! Martin still lives in Elswick and with over 55 years service and commitment to the company he remains a significant part of the Bonds story.
  • As a company founded by farmers, the Rigby family, now one of the biggest farming families on the Fylde coast, are very proud to carry on the tradition of this iconic brand.
